Morning FS fam! I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Question... How does everyone feel about cardio for weight loss? I've been seeing social media ads saying that cardio doesnt work as well as weight training for weight loss. So I’ve cut back on it and replaced it with my indoor rock climbing and moderate weight training. But it isnt really working for weight loss though great for muscle toning. My arms and legs are ok. There is still some jiggly in those areas but it seems to be more loose skin than fat. The fat I see more is on my belly. I'm considering adding back my cardio. What do you think?

Also, I'm in my mid-50s now and post meno which I feel has impacted my ability to lose weight, my metabolism and my ability to work out hard like before. I have to do everything a little slower and lower impact. Again, social media is saying age should not be a factor in my weight loss, etc… I know I shouldnt buy into social media but it's difficult to ignore.

I read a pubmed article a few months ago that summarized a study for this. Cardio is great for losing fat quicker, but it is harder to build muscle without resistance training. Strength training builds muscle quicker and fat loss will be slower in the beginning.

In my experience you need to do both. I do 30-60 minutes of cardio daily and strength train every other day. I lose more weight faster when I’m focused on cardio (dancing and hiking), plus you can do them daily as opposed to strength training which needs recovery time. For heart and overall health, both will benefit weight loss.

I'm almost to menopause (48) and I need both weights and cardio. 💙

I think you have to do what works for you. I only strength train 3x a week for 45-60 minutes with 10 minutes of cardio such as kettlebells and ropes at the end of workout. The other 4 days I am not doing anything except normal activities. Possibly becasue of my age and arthritis I need the recovery days in between workouts. My workouts are M, W & F. I have been in menopause since 45 and I have loose skin on my belly and I measure it at 31" I want to go to 30' but my trainer tells me that I have to lose more weight and I dont want to becasue I feel 130# at 5'9 is good enough for me.

Amen, JB! Both really are great and have their own benefits!

I also think you need to do both. I walk 4-5 miles a day (i would run if i were able but surgeon has told me not to repeatedly) and workout with trainer 2x a week and occasionally one more time a week on my own. This has produced a 2 lb a week weight loss for on average until last few months as im getting closer to goal weight. The more muscle you have the more energy required to sustain them and cardio is excellent for the heart and pulmonary system so it’s important to do both. For reference im 59 post menopausal and also 5’9 with loose skin from weight loss. Best wishes on your journey to health🥰

Think of it cardio is lump sum, and weight training is compounding interests... cardio will burn as much calories as you do, weight training will make burning fat much easier in the longer run. You get as much benefit from weight trading for heart health, that is if you do compound movements. Isolations.... not so much

BEFORE DOING CARDIO, GET DOCTOR'S APPROVAL.

What pretty much everyone else said, do both. If you’re going for weight loss it’s probably a good idea to do weight training so you keep as much muscle as possible, since losing weight typically involves losing both fat and muscle. And as you get older there is bone density and balance issues that weight training can help with. Cardio helps burn extra calories and good for the heart. Both are very good for overall health.

Thanks everyone for responding. I figured as much but needed to hear it. I’m weight training/ strength training every other day and climbing. I was doing resting recovery with yoga, stretching, resistance band workouts in between and resting maybe once a week. I’m going to have to add cardio then when I do my recovery cause I’m too spent after climbing. ❤️

Even if you just incorporate 30 minutes a few times a week that would still make a difference p$m

remember muscle weighs more than fat. So you can lose fat and inches but lose as much weight because you are building muscle. Scales lie in that instant.. so put on some tight shorts..when they are loose..inches gone...that's no lie 😍

Along the lines of eskinner-i measure myself and take pics front back and side on the first of every month and record them in my hard bound journal. Measurements are chest, abs, hips biceps thighs and calves. You will be pleasantly surprised as the months roll by with the changes you will be able to visually see in your journal. Just a thought.

I concur......don"t listen to social media! Listen to your common sense. Your body will tell you if what your doing is working. Just using this app tells me your going in the right direction. a lot of those social media ads your seeing are made by mid to late 20 somethings who can still eat all they want and don't gain squat. Most of the men are shooting steroids which they will pay a price later. Cardio is really important for our age. I don't run anymore but I do walk briskly several miles a day in my neighborhood. I go to the gym every other day to build back tone I've lost from age and laziness. I've lost 50 pounds and shooting for another 20. Lets face the facts of life, age is a factor but if your paying attention and doing the best you can for your body (diet and muscle tone) your WAY ahead of the Average American. Kudos!!!! PS: If you must research on social media may I recommend Healthline.com especially the nutrition section.
