I often hear people say that they can't lose weight if they eat carbs, and that may be true for them, we are all different. But I just want to say that my diet consists of 35-40% carbs, and I do lose weight. I'm 80 years old (so I'm pretty sure my metabolism has slowed down considerably), am relatively inactive, eat about 1600 calories a day, have no forbidden foods, eat some combination of rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, fruit and vegetables every day and still lose weight. It is my personal opinion that CICO (calories in, calories out) is the primary factor in weight loss, no matter what form that factor takes. And I know that is what works for me. And, by the way my A1C has dropped from 6.1 to 4.8 during this journey.

I didnt pay a ton of attention to carbs other than staying away from white carbs and concentrated more on trying to get more protein. Im realizing i eat a fair amount of carbs tho and i got off 90 pounds so guess different things work for different bodies. I wish i could eat things that i know would trigger me but maybe one day. So glad you are doing great shirfleur!

Preferences and trigger foods may differ, but we are definitely not different. We are all governed by energy in vs. energy out(CICO). And carbs do not create extra energy no matter the person. That would suggest they are superior since calories keep us alive.

I agree with your analysis. I also just count calories and don’t worry about the categories much except I do track protein (because I usually don’t eat enough of it) and sodium (high blood pressure). Question for you - do you think it matters much how late a person eats dinner at night? Anybody who wants to offer an opinion, I am interested. I prefer to eat late. Like between 7:30 and 9 and am wondering if that gets in the way of losing.

There is no magical time of day where we store more fat than others. You still need a calorie surplus over a period of time.

I eat dinner late, because that's when I'm hungry, and it's my main meal of the day. I try to eat by nine, but sometimes it's ten.

Wow -- congratulations on the A1C. I'm just hoping to get below 6. I've been stuck at 6.2 for the past year! I have also found that I do best on a balance of carbs, protein and fats. But I try to eat primarily high fiber carbs -- veggies, grains like barley, etc. I lower my carbs and up my fiber by substituting cauliflower for rice or pasta, and it's working for me. I know it sounds a little odd -- but seriously, tomorrow we're having our weekly "splurge" meal by bringing in Chinese food -- but I'm going to steam some cauliflower to have with it, and skip the white rice. I think the reason I support shirfleur's approach is that I know this is how I have to eat rest of my life, and eating a no-carb diet is not health over the long haul.

I eat carbs & I eat dinner late (around 8 PM). I lost my weight & have maintained the loss. That being said, I watch the quantity of carbs as they can be high in calories if you eat too much.

Shir speaking the truth. I think what it is, is the short term impact carbs tends to do. Like for instance the same amount of calories of high carb vs low carb will show weightloss. That’s why it’s so easy to make it the enemy and say it’s fattening regardless of calories

Same. I'd say I eat 100% carbs because I'm vegetarian. The key is WHICH carbs you're eating. Vegetables? Cake? Legumes? Cookies? Fresh? Processed? more or less of the amount of kcal you burn?

People demonize carbs because they call cake, cookies, pizza, etc carbs when they contain just as much/more/slightly less calories from fat.

Like Immort says, carbs are low calorie when not combined with fats. Fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, etc are mainly carbs and they are filling and nutritious.

IMO: It's whatever works for you. You take care of your body every day of your life. Who knows more about you than you. You don't need a PHD to tell you what you already know.

Excellent A1C #. I'm envious of your beautiful fruit bowls, but that doesn't work for me. Different strokes, for different folks!
